“Portraiture is an art-form in its own right with there being plenty of discussion on what constitutes a good portrait. To my mind, by definition, a portrait should portray the subject in a recognisable manner and for most people this means that the portrait is a life-like portrayal which they can immediately recognise.
My aim is to ‘bring a photo to life’.
It would seem that what I do is what most people want because over the last few years when I have entered an exhibition with one of my portraits it has often won the
People’s Choice award”.

- The Great Southern Portrait Prize 2009 – “Cliffy” won the “People’s Choice”
- Life Aquatic 2011 – “Old Man of the Sea” won the “People’s Choice”
- Sally specialises in bringing to life photographs of both people and pets, using a combination of pastels and graphite pencil.
- Sally feels that a far more interesting portrait can be painted with the use of photos as these can often capture a typical but fleeting expression of the subject giving a better insight into the character and personality of the person. When someone has to sit still for a period of time for a live sitting it is easy for them to become stilted and not project a true image of themselves.
- In the case of children and animals it is just about impossible to get them to stay still for any length of time anyway and it is also the ideal way for people to be able to remember loved ones.
